April 12-14, 2016
Tuesday was a busy day in the OR. We had 2 complicated ENT
cases, 2 complex plastic surgery/burn reconstructions, and 7 orthopedic cases.
Three of these were ones that would not have been done without our visiting
ortho team, one of these I am sure has never been done in Ethiopia. All 3 were
for children who had an injury to their arm during birth. The surgeries are
designed for them to eventually be able to use their arm. The audiology team performed 52 hearing
screenings at a local school. Many of us
went to a local Ethiopian restaurant for dinner.
Wednesday was another busy OR day. We had 2 ENT and 10 orthopedic OR cases, six
of which were specially selected for our visiting surgeons. The audiology team completed 82 evaluations
at the local school. Many people went to
dinner at an Ethiopian Cultural restaurant which has traditional Ethiopian food
and dancing. Drs Glenn, Scott and
Duretti and I had dinner with our orthopedic host and his family.
Thursday was a complicated day! We had 2 ENT and 2 plastic surgery/burn cases
and 6 ortho cases, two of which were for our visiting surgeons. There were 12 ENT patients to see in
clinic. The audiologists evaluated 12
patients at an orphanage and fitted 4 hearing aids, and also finished the
evaluations at the local school. In all,
they evaluated 180 students, and identified 7 with un-recognized hearing loss
and provided them with hearing aids. The
orthopedic physicians gave lecture to about 80 people at Black Lion hospital,
and the ENT physicians did a simulation lab/teaching course for the ENT
department. I visited the anesthesia
directors at St. Paul’s hospital. Most
of us had dinner in the hotel in either the Italian or Indian restaurant.
On Friday we will be at Cure and at Makinessa
School for the Deaf, and most of us leave late tomorrow night.
