March 5

Another full day in Ethiopia!  We had 2 ENT cases in the OR today, a simple one of tubes in the ears, and another complex windpipe/airway case.  There were also 6 orthopedic cases.  Dr. Glenn saw several patients in the clinic and then went to the School for the Deaf to check patients.  The audiologists were busy at the School for the Deaf also.  Dr. Glenn and I had a late afternoon meeting with officials from another hospital that we have collaborated with.  Now - team dinner.
Hard to believe the week is almost over!

We had many things going on today.  I was in the OR at Cure where we had 9 orthopedic and plastic surgery cases.  Dr. Glenn was in clinic and then did a teaching session with ENT residents.  The audiology team had a busy day and saw about 30 patients for hearing evaluations and hearing aid fittings and repairs.  Dr. Glenn met with the Dean of the medical school, Dr. Mary and I met with another anesthesiologist who has been here multiple times and has made many valuable contributions, and then we had dinner at a local Ethiopian restaurant.  It has been a busy week, and we are already making plans for our next trip later in the year.

Dr. Glenn and I were in the OR today.  He had two OR cases, one a complex surgery on the windpipe and the second a complicated ear surgery.  Ethiopian ENT doctors were working with him.   I also helped with the 10 orthopedic cases in the OR with Dr. Mary, the anesthetists and an Ethiopian anesthesia resident.  It was great to see lots of people that we have gotten to know well over the years.  Our audiologists were busy at the school for the Deaf.  Dr. Glenn and I had dinner with some visiting medical students at a local Chinese restaurant.  Tomorrow - ENT clinic and teaching sessions and OR for me.

Ethiopia March 2, 2015

Today is a holiday in Ethiopia. It commemorates the Battle of Adwa, fought on 1 March 1896 between the Ethiopian Empire and the Kingdom of Italy near the town of Adwa. It was the climactic battle of the First Italo-Ethiopian War, securing Ethiopian sovereignty.
The OR was closed at Cure today, but we had an ENT clinic. We saw patients until early afternoon in clinic, the audiology team evaluated hearing all day, and the ENT team did some resident teaching in the afternoon. I worked on some repairs for an anesthesia machine, made an inventory of anesthesia machines and monitors, and helped out in the clinic.
We saw two children who had profound hearing loss. One was two and the parents suspected it but had no way to have her seen before. Unfortunately there is little we can do except try to see if we can find a school for the deaf near where they live. Not surprisingly, the parents are devastated. The other was 7 and has no language skills. It was a very sobering reminder of the devastating effects of untreated illnesses.
Most of us will have dinner tonight in our hotel. OR tomorrow and the audiology team will go to the school for the deaf.
It was warm and sunny here and is still beautiful as the sun goes down.

Ethiopia March 1, 2015

Our team all made it here without significant issues.Ours is a small team this time - 2 audiologists, Dr. Glenn and myself and Desi our administrator.  We met up with another ENT surgeon and two ENT residents who have been here before, and we will be collaborating all week.  We also linked with three medical students that I have been working with who are here from Vanderbilt for 10 weeks working on some projects.
It was a non-patient care day and relatively quiet.  Two of the team members got in early this morning.  The ENT doctors gave some lectures today;  we met with a variety of people throughout the day talking about collaborative projects for ENT, hearing loss and anesthesia education.  We will continue those conversations throughout the week.
Tomorrow is a holiday, so we will just have clinic and have some educational programs with the ENT residents.
It is warm and sunny here - a big change for most of us from the cold snowy northeast US!  It is wonderful to see old friend and make some new ones!
