October 30:

We had a full day today. Dr. Gabe gave a lecture, the ENT team saw some patients in clinic, we did some OR cases and then we saw some patients in the hospital. We went to some shops in town to buy souvenirs and spices and had a traditional Ethiopian dinner. Now for bed and a busy day tomorrow.

October 29:

Had a quick flight (one hour) last night to Mekele where we will be working for the next three days. Have lots of ENT cases scheduled. It is sunny and warm here! All are well.

Finished our OR cases today and going to dinner soon. We did several ENT cases today and worked with the ENT surgeon and residents and anesthesia personnel. It is beautiful and we are sitting outside enjoying the cool evening tonight.

Had a wonderful traditional Ethiopian dinner at a local restaurant with our ENT surgeon host, Dean of the medical school, Chief medical officer and two soon-to-be ENT residents. Good food and conversation. Tomorrow - lectures, clinic and OR cases. A good day!

October 28:

Working at Cure hospital today. ENT team seeing 60+ patients in clinic. I am helping in OR with ortho cases. There is also a visiting oral surgery team here, today they are reconstructing a child's face who was bitten by a hyena. Then they have a tumor resection to do.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Our trip to Addis was uneventful.  Our flights were easy, and so were our connections.  Everyone made it on time, our luggage all arrived safely, and we are already busy.  

Our team has ten members from Philadelphia, Boston, California and Oregon.  We have 4 ENT surgeon, 1 ICU nurse, 3 Audiologists, an administrator and me.  Today the ENT doctors gave lectures to the Ethiopian ENT residents.  

Several of us went to church where we met some others from the US who live and work here.  This afternoon some of us went to Cure Hospital to drop off equipment.  We will see ENT patients in clinic there tomorrow, and I will help in the OR.  Others went sightseeing and we will have a team dinner tonight with a few others who we know in town.

It is mid 70s here and sunny.  The hotel was busy this weekend with visiting dignitaries, graduations and a wedding.  I had time for a quick swim in the pool.

On the road again to Ethiopia!!
